JEREMY DUTCHER

Alianait Arts Festival proudly presents: Award-winning artist Jeremy Dutcher live in Iqaluit as a part of their concert series!
Join us on February 22, 2025, for an unforgettable evening of music at St. Jude’s Cathedral, featuring an opening performance by Iqaluit’s own TAANIKILLI.

JEREMY DUTCHER

Jeremy Dutcher is a classically trained tenor, Two-Spirit song carrier, activist, ethnomusicologist, and proud member of Neqotkuk (Tobique First Nation) in Eastern Canada. A passionate advocate for language revitalization, Jeremy’s debut album, Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa, brought century-old archival recordings of his ancestors to life through powerful compositions on the grand piano. Sung entirely in Wolastoqey—his endangered mother tongue—the album earned him the prestigious 2018 Polaris Music Prize and led to collaborations with icons like Yo-Yo Ma and Leslie Feist.

In 2024, Jeremy made history as the first two-time Polaris Music Prize winner with his sophomore album, Motewolonuwok ᒣᑌᐧᐁᓓᓄᐧᐁᒃ. His music transcends boundaries, weaving classical and jazz influences with reverence for traditional songs and the urgency of modern-day resistance. Jeremy’s work is celebrated for its fearless exploration of queerness, Indigeneity, language revitalization, and cultural preservation.

TAANIKILLI

Opening the evening will be Iqaluit’s very own TAANIKILLI, a dynamic throat-singing group featuring Miria Quassa, Mia Maurice, Taiga Las, and Olivia Chislett. Known for their powerful performances that blend traditional Inuit throat singing with contemporary artistry, TAANIKILLI has captivated audiences across Canada. Their music brings to life the rich storytelling traditions of Inuit culture, offering a unique and modern take on a timeless art form.
